The Douglas™ C-47 Skytrain, also known as the “Dakota” (DACoTA, or Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft), was one of the most popular transport aircraft of World War II. Produced by the USA, it was also delivered to other Allied countries. It was based on the design of the civil version of the Douglas DC-3. The aircraft was present on virtually all fronts of World War II, and its operation continued long after its end. It was used, among others purposes, for landing paratroopers, such as famously being used during Operation Overlord, and towing gliders, as well as for transporting supplies, ammunition and evacuating the wounded. The C-47 is one of the most widely used cargo aircraft in history, being operated by over 90 countries over it's life time and eve still being in service today, by countries such as South Africa, Thailand and Columbia as well as being used in civil roles owned by private companies.
