It was the first Western Allied tank to use torsion sticks as suspensions. Occasionally, Allied soldiers opened fire on their own tanks because the Chaffee chassis resembled a German Panzer II and a Panther. The tank was used in battles in France, Italy and the Third Reich. The tank saw service after the war with the US army up until 1953 when it was replaced with the M41 Walker bulldog. It enjoyed great popularity and found many buyers all over the world. The M24 was also used in the Korean War. Units belonging to France fought in Indochina and Algeria. In the Vietnam War they were used by the South Vietnamese army. Over its long service life it was modernised by many countries such as Norway with their NM-116 upgrade, that was retired in 1993 and Chile which upgraded its Chaffee's with Italian 60mm Hyper Velocity Medium Support\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (HVMS) gun's, these were retired in 1999. The Chaffee was finally retired for good by the Uruguayan army in 2019 ending its 61 year service career. The production of the tanks began in 1944 and continued until the following year. About 2,200 units were produced. The tank was equipped with armour up to 102mm thick and an effective 90mm M3 cannon. The end of World War II did not mean the end of the service of the Pershing. They went into battle again during the Korean War of 1950-1953. They were soon phased out and replaced by a derivative of the vehicle, known as the M46 Patton. However, it did see several export customers, such as Italy, France and South Korea. Britain also received 12 several through the lend-lease programme.
